Every year, the Consumer Electronics Show brings us the latest, most exciting and innovative technology, and this year it didn’t let us down. Last year was all about everyone’s favourite voice assistants – Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant, and this year we saw a continuation of this trend. There were a multitude of new devices including them or including compatibility with them, even toilets…yes you heard me right, toilets!
But we have also seen some other smart home trends in 2019. From home security to smart mirrors, and below we’ve given you a quick update on a few of our favourites.
First up is Ring. At CES this year, Ring revealed not 1, but 13 new products! One of our favourites was the new Door View Cam.
The concept is just like Ring’s previous doorbell cameras, but instead of replacing your doorbell, it replaces your front door’s peephole. It’s totally wireless and requires no permanent alterations, making it a great option for renters!
Like previous versions it offers motion detection and streams video straight to your phone via the app, as well as allowing you to talk to whoever is on your doorstep. What sets it apart from its predecessors is a built-in impact sensor that can automatically detect when someone knocks on your door. And the Door View Cam can be used just like an analogue glass peephole.
Ring says that the Door View Cam will be available in the US and UK, as well as a few other countries later this year for £179.
Arlo Security System
Next up if you’re looking for a smart home gadget that will keep your home safe from pretty much anything, then look no further than the Arlo Security System. It has an all-in-one multi-sensor that detects motion, smoke, carbon monoxide, water leaks, gas leaks, temperature changes and more. If anything at all changes in your home, you’ll be notified immediately though the app.
You can also set it to trigger other Arlo devices connected to the Smarthub. For example, if it detects motion you can have a camera start recording. It even talks to your other smart home devices so your lights could switch on automatically when you stumble into the house after a late night and struggle to find the light switch.
They have yet to announce any pricing, but Arlo says the security system will be available to buy in the second half of 2019.
Capstone Connected Home
And finally, on to my personal favourite! Capstone Connected Home announced the launch of its Google-enabled Smart Mirror. It has both voice and touch screen capabilities and allows you to access Google Assistant, check weather and traffic before you head out for the day, and stream YouTube, super helpful if like me your morning mirror routine can take while!
You’ll also be able to access social media feeds, and having Google Assistant built in to the mirror means you can even access Google Drive and type out emails using the touchscreen, getting a head start on your day.
Again, Capstone haven’t released any pricing as of yet but they have said it will be available to buy in the next few months!
